Pool Rules Made Simple: 8-Ball vs 9-Ball for Beginners

INTRODUCTION: SAME CUES, DIFFERENT GAMES

But 8-ball and 9-ball are two very different games, and if you’re new to pool (or always unsure of the rules), this blog will give you the clarity you need to start playing like you mean it.

We’ll cover:

  • The basic rules of both games

  • The key differences

  • Table sizes you’ll need

  • Tips for learning faster

And yes — how to choose the right table for both.

WHAT ARE THE RULES OF 8-BALL POOL?

Basic 8-Ball Setup:

  • 15 object balls: 7 solids (1–7), 7 stripes (9–15), or 7 Red and 7 Yellow and the black 8 ball

  • Cue ball is white

  • Balls are racked in a triangle with the 8 ball in the center

Basic 8-Ball Setup English

How to Play:

  1. Break the rack. If you pot a ball, you continue

  2. You’re assigned solids or stripes depending on the first ball you pot

  3. Once you’ve cleared your group, pot the black 8 ball to win

  4. If you pot the 8 ball early — it’s game over.

Winning:

Pot the 9 ball legally — by combo, carom, or clean shot — after hitting the correct ball first.

8-BALL VS 9-BALL: KEY DIFFERENCES

Want to try both? You don’t need two tables.
Keep reading — we’ll show you how one table handles both.

WHAT POOL TABLE SIZE DO YOU NEED?

Both 8-ball and 9-ball can be played on:

  • 6ft pool tables — perfect for tighter spaces or patios

  • 7ft tables — most popular for pubs, man caves, and multi-format play

  • 9ft (pro tournaments only — not needed for home use)

At Titan, we supply 6ft and 7ft precision slate tables, both ideal for 8-ball AND 9-ball.
You’ll only need 1.5 meters of cue space all around to play comfortably.
